On June 17, 1861He got raised to brigadier-general, and then on October 7, 1861, promoted to a major-general he was put in charge of the valley district witch enabled him to gain power, confidence and he also could practice his strategies their, he keep this position until November of that year. He was given a small group of men before he attacked the great Virginia valley, and he did not finish his campaign until spring of 1862.
